Why did only some students receive an email about being eligible?

Students must have GPA of 3.5 or greater in upper division UC Davis coursework; and students must have graduated in September 2023 or December 2023, or will be graduating in March 2024 or June 2024.

Do I need to be in the College of Biological Sciences to apply?

Only the Ron and Lydia Baskin Research Awards welcome graduating seniors from any of the four colleges at UC Davis.

Who receives Department Citations?

Students who have graduated in the preceding Summer, Fall, and Winter Quarters and to those who have filed to graduate the in current Spring Quarter with a UC GPA of 3.7 or above.

What is the difference between a Department Citation and an Outstanding Performance Citation (a.k.a. CBS’ Distinguished Scholar Award)?

A Department Citation is awarded automatically to students who have graduated in the preceding Summer, Fall, and Winter Quarters and to those who have filed to graduate the in current Spring Quarter with a UC GPA of 3.7 or above. An Outstanding Performance Citation (which is also known as a Distinguished Scholar Award in the College of Biological Sciences) requires an application and is given to graduating seniors who have conducted substantial research before graduation and maintained an upper division GPA of at least 3.5. The Outstanding Performance Citation is notated on transcripts.

What awards will get posted to my transcript?

Honors/High Honors/Highest Honors are noted on transcripts, in addition to Outstanding Performance Citations.

How are the Outstanding Senior Awards selected?

An Outstanding Performance Citation (which is also known as a Distinguished Scholar Award in the College of Biological Sciences) requires an application and faculty recommendation letter; and is given to graduating seniors who have conducted substantial research before graduation and maintained an upper division GPA of at least 3.5. Final selections are made by the college’s Undergraduate Student Awards Committee which consists of several faculty members.

What if I am officially graduating in the Summer?

Students graduating in summer quarter 2023 must apply the following year (2024-25).

How long should a recommendation letter be? What should it include?

There is no length requirement but it should be less than 5000 characters. Letter writers should explain how the student contributed to research or community, and describe the qualities of the student that make them deserving of recognition.

When is the deadline for recommendation letters? How will I know if my recommendation letters have been submitted?

Recommendation letters are due two weeks after the close of the application period but can be accepted later depending on the awards committee review load. After submitting your application you will have access to a page where you can monitor the status of recommendations.

Can I put down more than one contact for a recommendation letter?

Before submitting the online application, a question asks for any letter writers. After submission, the student can click “Add a Faculty Letter Writer” on their application status page.

What if I need to change who is submitting recommendation letters for me?

The student can click “Add a Faculty Letter Writer” on their application status page to request a letter from a new letter writer.

What should faculty look for when they’ve been requested to write a recommendation letter?

Faculty should check for an email from CBS Awards (cbs-awards@ad3.ucdavis.edu) with the subject “Request for Letter of Recommendation”. Please note that if our system receives a bounce-back from an email address submitted, you will be contacted by an awards administrator.

What happens if my application is missing one or more recommendation letters at the time of review?

At least one research recommendation letter must be submitted for any applicant to be eligible. If a community service letter is not submitted, the applicant will not be eligible for the College Medal and CBS Student of the Year Award, but are still eligible for the Ron and Lydia Baskins Research Award.

I have been part of a research lab for 3 years and have been involved in a project for 2 years but it was only until this quarter that I signed up for research units. Am I eligible?

What should I include about my research on the application?

Research contributions should provide a "big picture" of the student's research as well as their specific contribution. Why is the research interesting/important and what has been learned? Awards and conferences can be included, especially if the student made a presentation.

Who will notify me if I’ve been selected (or not selected) for an award?

Award recipients will be notified via email from the Dean. Applicants were not selected will be notified via email by the Undergraduate Students Awards Committee Chair.

What if my research experience was NOT at UC Davis?

As long as off-campus research can be proven to be of substantial and viable experience by a research mentor, you may include it in lieu of research done at UC Davis. It is recommended to also include a UC Davis faculty member letter as a secondary recommendation reference.
