Dean's Circle Study Abroad Scholarship

The College of Biological Sciences in partnership with UC Davis Study Abroad has developed summer course options to study Introductory Biology in Ireland or Scotland (UK).

BIS2A: University College Cork, Ireland
BIS2B: University College Dublin, Ireland
BIS2C: University of Edinburgh, Scotland (UK)

Eligibility:

  • Enrolled major in the College of Biological Sciences
  • Financial need (we will check with financial aid after you apply)
  • Good academic standing (no minimum GPA requirement)
  • Willingness to document your experience while studying abroad
  • MUST be able to attend Study Abroad BIS2A, BIS2B, or BIS2C during the summer of 2020
  • Preference will be given to those with no prior international travel experience

Application Process:

Complete the online application by November 1, 2019
  • Complete the application which includes two 300-word essay questions.
  • Provide the name and email of someone we can contact for a letter of recommendation (from a current/former instructor or current/former employer)

Selection Process Timeline:

  • November 1, 2019: Deadline to submit application.
  • November 4, 2019: Deadline for letters of recommendations.
  • November 1 – 14: All applications submitted by the deadline will be evaluated by the Selection committee to select the top (3-5) finalists of faculty, Dean’s office staff, study abroad office staff, and a CBS study abroad returnee.
  • On or before November 15th, top (3-5) finalists will be notified and invited to be interviewed by the selection committee.
  • November 20 (approximately): The top finalists will interview with the selection committee.
  • December 15th: The scholarship awardee will be notified. A runner up will be identified in case the awardee is unable to participate in the program.
  • Mid-January: The awardee enrolls at study abroad for the summer 2020 course
  • TBD: Pre- and post-program lunch with the Dean and selected guests

Dean's Circle Study Abroad Scholarship

Recognizing that study abroad can be a life-changing experience, Dean Mark Winey of the College of Biological Sciences with the support of donors to the CBS Dean’s Circle is excited to offer a substantial scholarship to a CBS student to participate in one of these courses in Ireland or Scotland.

What the scholarship offers:

  • All UC Davis tuition and fees for the Summer Abroad Program (BIS 2A, BIS 2B, BIS 2C) plus enrollment support from a BASC advisor
  • All travel expenses, including flights and fees for acquiring any travel documents such as a passport and visa
  • Allowance for “on-the-ground” expenses while in Ireland or Scotland (out-of-pocket meals, entertainment, etc.)
  • Stipend to offset some of the lost income that may have been earned through a summer job/internship
